The City of Tshwane pulled the plug on Tshwane University of Technology’s (TUT) main campus, citing R5.8 million unpaid electricity bill.
This forms part of the city’s ongoing Ya Tima Campaign, led by Mayor Nasiphi Moya, aimed at cracking down on defaulting institutions and recovering millions in outstanding municipal debts.
Monday’s disconnections didn’t stop at TUT—Protea Hotel in Hatfield was also cut off over a R7 million debt, while properties in Arcadia and Sunnyside were targeted for owing more than R3.7 million and R2 million respectively.
One Sunnyside property was even found bypassing the city’s electricity meter.
But in a quick turnaround, TUT paid its overdue amount shortly after the visit, and the city restored power to the campus later that day.
