The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) just locked in a major partnership with Takealot Group to level up skills and job opportunities.
Signed by Deputy Minister Dr. Mimmy Gondwe, the MoU supports young people with real industry experience—mainly via Takealot’s Township Economy Initiative.
Takealot CEO Frederik Zietsman shared that the programme will roll out across the country, with SETAs stepping in to fast-track skills growth and boost employment.
-
Focus Area 1 – Adoption of TVET and Community Colleges
This goes beyond symbolic adoption — it offers practical impact. Students will gain Work Integrated Learning opportunities by working directly with Takealot, applying their classroom knowledge in real-world settings such as logistics, e-commerce, and tech-driven business.
Additionally, Takealot will assign industry experts to help shape curriculum development, ensuring teaching aligns with the needs of today’s workforce.
-
Focus Area 2 – Expansion of the Takealot Bursary Programme
Takealot will grow its bursary programme, and the DHET will match this contribution. This will double the reach of the bursary scheme, allowing more students—especially in high-demand fields like ICT, logistics, and e-commerce—to access quality education.
-
Focus Area 3 – Distribution of Textbooks to Students
Takealot will leverage its nationwide logistics network to deliver textbooks to students at universities and colleges, ensuring timely access to essential learning materials.
-
Focus Area 4 – Training and Takealot Township Economy Initiative
In collaboration with SETAs, this initiative will support township entrepreneurs and SMEs in entering the digital economy. Through Takealot’s MrD platform, township-owned restaurants and young entrepreneurs will gain visibility and reach more online customers.
