Mail & Guardian (M&G) has officially opened applications for its 2026 Journalism Internship Programme, allowing recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in one of South Africa’s leading newsrooms.
The 12-month internship is aimed at graduates who are passionate about journalism, current affairs, and public-interest reporting. Successful candidates will work alongside experienced editors and reporters while developing practical newsroom skills in reporting, research, writing, and digital storytelling.
The internship is scheduled to begin on 1 August 2026, with successful applicants receiving a monthly stipend throughout the programme.
Who should apply?
M&G is looking for recent graduates with:
- A qualification in Journalism, Media Studies, Communications or a related field.
- Strong writing, research, and communication skills.
- High proficiency in English.
- A genuine interest in current affairs and public-interest journalism.
- The ability to stay organised and work well under deadline pressure.
What you’ll do
Interns will gain real newsroom experience by:
- Supporting the newsroom with research, background preparation, and fact-checking.
- Assisting with reporting, story development, and article writing.
- Attending editorial meetings and contributing story ideas.
- Sourcing relevant images, quotes, and multimedia content.
- Uploading and formatting digital content when required.
- Working closely with editors and reporters to meet newsroom deadlines.
- Keeping up with current affairs, trends, and issues shaping public conversation.
- Assisting with other newsroom-related duties throughout the programme.
The internship is designed to equip aspiring journalists with practical industry experience while helping them build the skills needed for a career in digital and print media.
