The City of Johannesburg has opened applications for its 2026 Human Settlements Internship Programme, giving South African students and graduates an opportunity to gain practical workplace experience in local government.
The internship is based in Johannesburg, Gauteng, and is aimed at helping young people build careers in public administration, research, communication, and municipal governance.
According to the internship notice, the programme falls under the Human Settlements Department and is located in the Executive Director’s Office. The internship will run for up to 18 months under Circular 008/2026, offering structured exposure to administration, monitoring and evaluation, planning support, compliance work, and stakeholder coordination.
The City says applicants must have Matric (Grade 12) and a Degree at NQF Level 6 or 7 in fields such as Business Management, Business Administration, Journalism, Media, Public Administration, or Public Management. Applicants must also be residents within the City of Johannesburg and should not have participated in a similar internship in the same field before.
Successful candidates will receive a monthly stipend of R10,109.86 if they have completed their qualification with a minimum of 360 credits, while currently enrolled students will receive R4,951.88 per month. The programme is designed to equip interns with hands-on experience, improve their employability, and deepen their understanding of how municipal services are delivered to communities.
