South Africa’s unemployment crisis has worsened again, with the official unemployment rate climbing to 32.7% in the first three months of 2026.
According to Statistics South Africa, around 8.1 million people are currently unemployed.
Between January and March alone, the country lost more than 300,000 jobs, while employment dropped to 16.8 million people.
The biggest job losses came from sectors like:
* Community and social services
* Construction
* Transport
* Private households
Some industries did see small gains, including:
* Manufacturing
* Mining
* Agriculture
Young people remain among the hardest hit, especially graduates and first-time job seekers struggling to enter the job market. Many women working in lower-paying or informal jobs were also heavily affected.
Stats SA also revealed that more South Africans are giving up on searching for work altogether.
The expanded unemployment rate, which includes discouraged job seekers, has now climbed to 43.7%.
For many families, these numbers go beyond statistics.
Job losses often mean unpaid bills, financial stress, and less money circulating in communities. Small businesses are also feeling pressure as households continue cutting back on spending.
