NSFAS 2027 Applications Are Now Open

Applications close 18 November 2026.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has opened applications for the 2027 academic year, giving students seeking financial support the chance to apply early.

Higher Education and Training Minister Buti Manamela says several changes have been introduced for the new NSFAS application cycle, with a focus on making the process smoother and improving the overall student experience.

Some of the key changes include:

  • Better student data: NSFAS will pull student information directly from higher education institutions to improve data accuracy.
  • Automated document checks: Documents will be verified digitally, helping speed up the application process.
  • Electronic signatures: Students will be able to sign documents electronically instead of dealing with unnecessary paperwork.
  • Improved student support: NSFAS is also upgrading its support environment to make it easier for students to get assistance.

NSFAS is also working with the Department of Home Affairs to strengthen the verification of student registration and banking details.

Another major development is the work underway on a Loan Management System, which will support student loans for the so-called “missing middle”, referring to students who may not qualify for traditional NSFAS funding but still need financial assistance.

2027 NSFAS application deadline

Students have until 18 November 2026 to submit their applications for the 2027 academic year.

Successful applicants are expected to receive their funding outcomes in December 2026, ahead of registration for the new academic year.
