A new space for arts, culture and creativity in Johannesburg.

Wits University is currently building a R341 million Cultural Precinct in Braamfontein, creating a new space for arts, culture and creativity in Johannesburg.

The five-year project will bring together some of Wits’ key cultural and creative facilities and open them to a wider Johannesburg audience.

The precinct will include the Wits Art Museum, Jack Ginsberg Centre for Book Arts and Chris Seabrooke Music Hall, alongside new creative spaces.

A new Digital Arts building will also form part of the development, with additional facilities planned for the Wits School of Arts.

The project will expand Wits’ music and fine arts facilities, while introducing new exhibition and foyer spaces for visitors.

Plans also include a theatre amphitheatre and upgrades to the existing Wits Theatre Complex, creating more opportunities for performances and cultural events.

Lifestyle spaces will add another layer to the precinct, with restaurants, coffee shops, bookshops and other spaces planned throughout the development.

South African billionaire Chris Seabrooke is largely funding the project, which is expected to support the ongoing regeneration of Johannesburg’s inner city.

Once completed, the Cultural Precinct will create a more connected home for arts, performance, heritage and creative culture in Braamfontein.
