Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga is expected to release the 2013 Annual National Assessment (ANA) results today.
The ANA was put in place by the Department of Basic Education as a tool to annually measure progress in learner achievement in numeracy and literacy. It is one of the initiatives that form the backbone of the DBE’s Action Plan to 2014: Towards the Realisation of Schooling 2025.
This year, over seven million learners from grades 1- 6 and 9 sat for the tests. The ANA targets literacy and numeracy because these have been found universally to be the key foundational skills for successful learning in school and beyond.
ANA results are not used for learner progression or promotion. They are, however, a means to assess whether a child needs extra help or not.
Educators will see to what extent the learners in their classes measure up to expectations.
They will use the results to inform their lesson plans and district officials will use the results to design school improvement plans and to give the appropriate support to schools.
