The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), in partnership with the Education Training and Development Practices Sector Education Training Authority (ETDP SETA) will give second chances to matriculants to rewrite their exams.
The institutions have set aside R10 million for the programme, sending out a message for those who have failed not to despair. The initiative aims to improve the learners’ marks. Priority subjects are Maths, Physical Science, English, Accounting and Life Science.
The announcement of the programme came as the NYDA and its partners awarded scholarships to their top students of 2013.
NYDA top achiever, Naledi Khoza, says she will work hard to keep her marks high and hold on to her bursary while pursuing her studies at Wits University.
The NYDA says it wants to extend this initiative to rural communities. Its chairperson, Yershen Pillay says rural learners, who walk long distances, get to school tired and back home exhausted. ” It certainly has an impact on their performance.”
According to Pillay, equally, the financial burden and various other challenges play a role.
Applications for 2014 will open on February 1.
