The Department of Higher Education and Training has urged students who are looking at enrolling at private colleges to ensure that the institutions are legally registered before they sign up.
The department has in the past been inundated with complaints from students who have fallen prey to bogus, illegal or unregistered private Further Education and Training (FET) colleges.
People are encouraged to call the toll-free number 0800 87 2222 to make sure that they institution they are considering joining is recognised and registered.
Students can also check the registration status of any private FET college on the department’s website, www.dhet.gov.za.
Any private college that offers occupational and trade qualifications must provide proof of accreditation by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) or a relevant body.
