The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has opened applications for the 2027 school year. Parents of learners entering Grade R, Grade 1, and Grade 8 must apply online.
The application window for Grade 1 and Grade 8 opened on 10 March 2026 and closes on 14 April 2026.
All applications must be submitted via the official WCED website: westerncape.gov.za/education.

To qualify:
- Children must be 6 years old in the year they enter Grade R
- Children must be 7 years old for Grade 1 (compulsory school age)
Required documents
- Child’s ID or birth certificate
- For foreign learners: passport or parents’ refugee/asylum permit
- Immunisation card/Road to Health chart (for primary school)
- Latest school report
- Proof of residence (rates account or lease agreement)
- If documents are missing, an affidavit from SAPS is required
Parents are encouraged to apply to at least three schools, including one closest to home, to improve placement chances. The WCED does not use feeder zones.
Parents should also note that schools are not allowed to charge any fees before a learner is officially accepted.
