South African weekly newspaper, Mail & Guardian, is hiring a Social Media Manager to join its editorial and digital team in Johannesburg.



This full-time, in-office role is suited for someone who thrives in a fast-paced newsroom and understands the demands of real-time news reporting.

The successful candidate will work closely with journalists, publishing breaking news across platforms like Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, X, and the publication’s CMS, while crafting sharp, journalistic captions and editing platform-ready video content.

The role also includes managing paid social campaigns and occasionally joining reporters on-site for major stories.

The ideal candidate should have a background in journalism or news media, a strong understanding of the South African news landscape, and hands-on experience with tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, CapCut, or Premiere Pro, as well as AI platforms such as Claude and ChatGPT.

YOU WILL

  • Work with newsroom and post breaking news in real time

  • Write sharp, engaging, journalistic captions & hashtags

  • Manage Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, X & website CMS

  • AI-savvy; edit and format video content tailored to each platform

  • Work closely with editorial teams to push content as it happens

  • Travel on-site with journalists for major stories

  • Schedule & curate weekend content

  • Boost and manage paid social content


YOU BRING

  • Strong background in journalism or news media

  • Deep understanding of the South African news landscape

  • Speed, accuracy & editorial instinct

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite

  • Video editing skills (CapCut / Edits, Premiere), AI-savvy, and strong writer

  • Working knowledge of Claude & ChatGPT

  • Ability to write across platforms in a clear, journalistic tone
