The minimum requirements to obtain the National Senior Certificate are:
(a) Achieve 40% in three subjects, one of which should be a home language
(b) Achieve 30% in three other subjects
Higher Education South Africa has developed further criteria required for admission to institutions of higher learning. The criteria are as follows:
1. Higher Certificate
(a) 30% in the language of teaching and learning of the institution of higher learning concerned
(b) Further criteria stipulated by institution of higher learning
2. Diploma
(a) 30% in the language of teaching and learning
(b) 40% and 49% in four subjects
(c) 30% in remaining subjects
3. Bachelor
(a) 50% or more in four subjects
(b) 40% home language
(c) 30% language of teaching and learning
(d) 30% remaining subjects
