Over R 9 billion in loans and bursaries is available in 2014 through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). NSFAS is the government student financial aid scheme that provides loans and bursaries to eligible students at the 25 public universities and 50 Further Education and Training colleges.
To be eligible, students must have:
• Academic potential to succeed at university or college and
• Must need financial support for tuition fees, residence, books, travel and accommodation.
The new NSFAS student-centred system is in place for the 2014 pilot universities and FET colleges, and will be implemented for all universities and FET colleges by 2016.
In 2014 the first group of universities and FET Colleges to use the new system is:
• Durban University of Technology
• Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University
• Sol Plaatje University
• University of Mpumalanga
• University of South Africa
• University of Venda
• Ekurhuleni East FET College
• King Hintsa FET College
• Motheo FET College
• South Cape FET College
• Umfolozi FET College
Students who wish to study at the above mentioned Universities and FET Colleges can apply directly to NSFAS online by visiting the NSFAS website – http://www.nsfas.org.za/NSFAS/MEDIA/NEWS/Applications_for_student_financial_aid,Media-External
