To celebrate Blood Donor Month, the South African National Blood Services (SANBAS) in association with 3M have launched a public campaign to collect 33.6 million ml of blood during the month of June. Blind adventurer, sportsman, motivational speaker and founder of the VisionTrust, Hein Wagner has pledged his support to this campaign and will act as ambassador.
Wagner believes this is a great cause and a wonderful opportunity for the community to get involved. “By donating blood, you give someone something money can’t buy, and something science can’t recreate. I urge all blind people, as well as all members of the community to go donate and capture the moment by taking a selfie,” says Wagner. Upload your photograph to Facebook and Twitter, using the hashtag #GiveBloodSelfie in support.
Despite this blindness, Wagner has a string of accomplishments to his name. He is an avid sportsman and enjoys abseiling, running and cycling. Wagner has won the World Cup Cricket for the Blind, sailed the Cape-to-Rio yacht race, completed the gruelling Ironman triathlon, finished the legendry Absa Cape Epic mountain biking race and most recently completed the extreme Antarctic Marathon on the South Pole. Wagner is also the current holder of the land speed record making him the fastest blind driver in history.
“On the 14th of June, I will be at one of the 3M selected SANBS blood donation clinics. Please join us and donate your live saving blood,” urges Wagner. “I would like to extend a special invitation to all my blind friends out there to please donate blood this month in support of the drive. No need to be scared, you won’t see it coming!” he jokingly adds.“And to honour this incredible initiative, 3M will donate 70 000 limited edition designer plasters to encourage all South Africans to support the challenge by donating blood,” Wagnerconcludes.
