The University of Cape Town ranked number one on the continent, followed by the University of Johannesburg and Wits, in the QS World University Rankings for Sub-Saharan Africa.
South African universities dominated the rankings, with nine institutions in the top 10 and eleven securing spots in the top 20.

Stellenbosch University and the University of Pretoria completed the top five.

The University of KwaZulu-Natal, North-West University, the University of the Free State, and the University of the Western Cape also ranked within the top 10.

Nelson Mandela University came in at 18th.
The inaugural ranking included 70 universities from 21 countries.
Ghana and Nigeria were also represented in the top 20, showing the region’s growing academic strength.
UCT earned top marks for academic and employer reputation, along with strong sustainability performance.
UJ was recognised for its global research network and student support levels. Other institutions stood out for research output and citation impact.
