2026 City of Johannesburg Student Internships

Closing date: 29 June 2026.

The City of Johannesburg is offering qualifying students the chance to apply for its 2026 Student Internship Programme in the Human Settlements Department.



The internship, based at 222 Smit Street in Braamfontein, allows students to build practical skills and complete the workplace training required as part of their studies. Open to those who have never taken part in an internship programme before, the placement will run for up to 18 months.

Offered through the Public Housing Programme Branch, successful candidates will support public housing projects through administrative duties and project coordination. The closing date for applications is 29 June 2026.

Remuneration

The stipend depends on your academic status:

  • R10 109.86 per month for candidates with a completed qualification of at least 360 credits
  • R3 500.00 per month for candidates who are still enrolled as students
  • Both are paid as a basic salary with no benefits.

Minimum requirements

Applicants must have:

  • Grade 12 / Matric
  • Either a National Diploma in Town Planning, Civil Engineering, Project Management, Construction Management, or another built environment-related qualification at NQF Level 7
  • Or an N6 qualification if they need in-service training to complete their studies
  • An enrolment confirmation letter from their institution, where applicable
  • Must be a City of Johannesburg resident

What the intern will do

The internship focuses on supporting the Public Housing Programme Directorate. Learning areas include:

  • Coordinating and monitoring housing programmes and projects
  • Supporting procurement strategy and tender/building contract compliance
  • Ensuring that departmental administrative procedures are followed properly

Skills and competencies

The City is looking for someone with strong organisation, confidentiality, communication, analytical, report-writing, and time-management skills. Applicants should also have ICT literacy, including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and a basic understanding of project management, construction management, teamwork, professionalism, and Batho Pele principles.
