Over the weekend (20 and 21 June 2026), the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) hosted its national Voter Registration Weekend ahead of the 2026 local government elections.
The two-day drive, held on 20 and 21 June, gave eligible voters the chance to take care of a few important tasks before election season officially ramps up. First-time voters could register, while those who had moved, changed addresses, or wanted peace of mind could update or confirm their registration details.
Anyone visiting a voting station was asked to bring one of three accepted forms of identification: a smart ID card, a green ID book, or a temporary identity certificate.
People who couldn’t make it to a registration point can register online via the IEC site – https://registertovote.elections.org.za.
Additionally, people can register via the SMS service by sending their ID numbers to 32810 to verify their status. A toll-free call centre is also available to landline users.
The 2026 local government elections are scheduled for 4 November 2026.
