A legal challenge that threatened to disrupt the release of matric results has been unsuccessful, allowing the Department of Basic Education to continue with its planned announcement.
The High Court in Pretoria ruled against an application brought by the Information Regulator.
As a result, matric results will be released through the channels that learners and families have become familiar with over the years.
The dispute centred on privacy concerns linked to the Protection of Personal Information Act.
The Information Regulator argued that the publication of results could place learners’ personal information at risk.
Questions were raised about whether enough was being done to protect pupils when exam outcomes are shared with the public.
However, the education department has already taken steps to reduce privacy risks. In recent years, many public result lists have used exam numbers instead of learners’ names.
The court examined whether these changes provided enough protection or whether additional limits should be introduced. After reviewing the matter, the judge found no reason to block the publication process.
The decision brings clarity for thousands of matriculants awaiting their results. It also ensures that the long-standing process of releasing matric outcomes can continue without interruption.
